Welcome To 1962 Topps Baseball Cards
When this set was issued, it was the largest set of baseball cards ever released. There were 598 cards and numerous variations which added to the challenge of compiling a truly complete set. The cards are 2 ½ by 3 ½ and the front of the card features a player photos surrounded by a wood grain frame. The card backs feature vital stats, a bio write-up a cartoon panel depicting career highlights.
The cards were sold in 1 cent wax packs and 5 cent wax and cello packs. The wax packs were dark green and featured ads for bazooka gum and different mail-in offers which varied depending on which series they were form. There are a number of supposed 1962 Topps 'rack packs' being sold on the market today, but there is controversy about whether these are original or counterfeit.
The set was released in 7 series distributed at various points throughout the year. The first series includes cards #1-109, the 2nd series 110-196, the third series 197-283, the 4th series 284-370, the fifth series 371-446, the 6th series 447-522, and the 7th series 523-598. Not all 7 series were available in all areas. Outside of major urban center, most stores would only have ordered some of the series. This means it was even tougher for many collectors to compile a complete set at the time.
Another problem with building a full set was the vulnerable design of these cards. The wood grain design used around the borders of the card is extremely easy to chip or damage. The second series was issued in two different variations. One version was the standard issue and the variant design was a green tint version. The green tint cards have a noticeable greenish hue to the backgrounds of the player photos. The green tint cards are much more rare, and they can be worth 6 to 10 times the value of their non-tinted counterparts.
There are a number of other scarce variations to look for form this set. For example the 7th series consists of many high number cards which were short-printed. The #1 Roger Maris card was the most often damaged because it was placed on top of the stacks of hand organized sets. Many Maris cards are found with heavy rubber band damage as well. There are undamaged Maris cards to be found though since not every one organized their cards with the #! Card on the top of the stack. Some important rookie cards to watch for from this set are: #99 John Boog Powell, #199 Gaylord Perry, #218 Joe Torre, #387 Lou Brock, #461 Ken Hubbs, #592 Jim Bouton (this card was short printed, and #594, Bob Uecker (also short printed), #167 Tim McCarver, #209 Jim Fregosi, #291 Al Downing, #591 Sam McDowell, and #596 Joe Pepitone.
The 1962 set includes some great action shots and it also includes a 10 card subset dedicated to Babe Ruth. That subset was created shortly after Roger Maris broke Ruth`s single season HR record. There are some other cards with notable artwork as well including the #1 Maris card, the #18 Managers Dream card featuring Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays, the #251 Yankees Team Photo, the #313 Maris Blasts`s 61st , the #318 Switch Hitter Connects depicting Mantle smash a home run, the #50 Musial card, the #288 Bill Williams Topps '61 All-Star Rookie card, #425 showing Yaz hefting 3 bats onto his shoulder, the #478 Don Zimmer card which shows him wearing a Mets cap but lists him as playing for the Reds, and the 353 card of the American League Home Run Leaders Maris, Mantle, Killebrew, and Gentile.
